WHY UP↑SCALE › FOR WHOM? › JEWELLERS & GOLD BUYERS

The scale for jewellers and gold buyers

Is it really 18 karat - and what do you pay for it? A density test on the scale spots most fakes in a minute, the gold calculator gives the price per piece, and every gram is on record.

What helps you most

1Density test, guided by the scale TEST IN FREEPRO

Weigh the piece in air, then hanging in water (Archimedes, hydrostatic weighing): the scale guides you through every step and takes the values by itself. You get the density with the uncertainty of your scale - and the closest materials from built-in tables. Plated brass or copper, lead and wrong alloys have the wrong density and show up at once. Also for silver, coins, gemstones and minerals.

2Fineness estimate

From the density the app estimates the fineness of gold and silver alloys (karat, ‰) - a quick check before you send the piece to an assay.

3Gold value and payout per piece

The gold price calculator: choose the karat (24 K to 8 K, or your own ‰), type in today's spot price per troy ounce, gram or kilo, and your payout in %. Every piece on the scale shows its fine gold, its value and your payout. The app has no price feed and never goes online for it - you type in the price of your bank.

4The units of the trade

Carat, grain, troy ounce, pennyweight, tola - next to grams, live with the weight. A fine scale (0.01 g, or a balance with the RS-232 adapter) gives you the steps you need.

5Every piece on record

Log every purchase with weight, karat and price. With ENTERPRISE every user logs in, every change of the scale (calibration, settings) is in the activity log, and reports are sealed - you can show where each gram went and that nobody quietly changed the scale. ENTERPRISE

Tips from the practice

  • No air bubbles on the piece in the water - a drop of dish soap helps. The manual has more density tips.
  • Small pieces = big uncertainty: the app shows it - use the finest scale you have.
  • Hold the weight (H button) for pieces that swing on the hook.

The rules you should know

  • Buying and selling precious metals by weight needs a verified scale (often accuracy class II)
  • A density test is a screening, no assay: the fineness is an estimate - and a core of tungsten has nearly the density of gold, so for bars and big pieces add other tests

No legal advice - check the rules for precious metal dealers in your country.
