℮ calculator: TNE, T1, T2 and the sample plan
Type in the nominal quantity of your pack: you get the tolerable negative error and the limits T1 and T2. Add the lot size for the sample plan - and paste the net weights of your sample to check the lot like the inspector does.
How it is calculated
The three rules of the packer (EU directive 76/211/EEC, in Germany the FPackV):
1. mean of the lot ≥ Qn (for a sample: mean + k × s ≥ Qn) 2. at most 2.5 % of the packs below T1 = Qn - TNE (FPackV: 2 %) 3. no pack below T2 = Qn - 2 × TNE
| Nominal quantity | TNE |
|---|---|
| 5 - 50 g / ml | 9 % |
| 50 - 100 | 4.5 g / ml |
| 100 - 200 | 4.5 % |
| 200 - 300 | 9 g / ml |
| 300 - 500 | 3 % |
| 500 - 1,000 | 15 g / ml |
| 1 - 10 kg / l | 1.5 % |
| 10 - 15 kg / l | 150 g / ml |
| 15 - 50 kg / l | 1 % |
The % values are rounded up to the next 0.1 g. Sample plans (single sampling, packs not opened): 100-500 packs: 50 packs, 3 allowed below T1, k = 0.379 · up to 3,200: 80 / 5 / 0.295 · up to 10,000: 125 / 7 / 0.234. Lots under 100 packs are checked pack by pack. k × s is the uncertainty of a sample: the mean of the sample may be that much below Qn.
Example: 250 g pack: TNE 9 g, T1 = 241 g, T2 = 232 g. A lot of 400 packs: weigh 50 at random, at most 3 below 241 g, none below 232 g, and mean + 0.379 × s ≥ 250 g.
On the scale it is done while you weigh
UP↑SCALE takes every pack from your verified scale (RS-232 adapter, LISTEN ONLY and EXACT WEIGHT) - no typing. Check-weighing shows every pack against T1 and T2 while you fill, the statistics show the mean, spread and Cp/Cpk, and the lot check gives the verdict with a printable lot report (PRO) - also for the USA along NIST Handbook 133. ℮ control step by step.

℮ prepackages: questions and answers
What is the TNE of a 500 g pack?
15 g (packs of 500 g to 1 kg). So T1 = 485 g and T2 = 470 g. For 250 g the TNE is 9 g (T1 241 g, T2 232 g), for 1 kg 15 g (T1 985 g, T2 970 g).
What do T1 and T2 mean?
T1 = Qn - TNE: at most 2.5 % of the packs of a lot (FPackV: 2 %) may be below it. T2 = Qn - 2 × TNE: no pack may be below it. And the mean of the lot must reach the nominal quantity.
How many packs must I weigh for an ℮ check?
For packs that are not opened: 50 for a lot of 100-500 packs, 80 up to 3,200 and 125 up to 10,000. Lots under 100 packs are checked pack by pack. Opened packs (destructive test) have smaller samples, e.g. 20 for every ℮ lot from 100 packs.
What is the k factor of the mean criterion?
A sample only estimates the mean of the lot, so the rule is mean + k × s ≥ Qn with k = t / √n: 0.379 for 50 packs, 0.295 for 80 and 0.234 for 125. The sample mean may be a little below Qn - a big spread still rejects a lot through the T1 and T2 rules.
Does the ℮ check need a verified scale?
Yes. Prepackages are checked with a verified scale. This calculator does the maths - the weights must come from a verified scale, and the official check is made by the weights and measures office.
Do the rules apply to ml as well as g?
Yes. The same table is used for volume: a 500 ml bottle has a TNE of 15 ml. The check is made on the net content - by weight via the density, or by volume.
