WHY UP↑SCALE › FOR WHOM? › COFFEE ROASTERS
The scale for coffee roasters
From the sack of green coffee to the sealed 250 g bag: roasters weigh all day. The ROASTERY ☕ MODE of UP↑SCALE turns your scales into a roast log with the roast loss of every batch, a green coffee ledger with origin and EUDR reference, a traceable bag line with fill weighing, ℮ statistics and labels - and a coffee scale to dial in your roasts.
Where it hurts in a roastery - and where we help
Roasting is the fun part. The rest is weighing, writing down, adding up and checking - often after closing time, on paper and in three spreadsheets. That costs you time, coffee and money:
| The pain | What it costs you | With UP↑SCALE |
|---|---|---|
| Batch weights in a notebook - green in, roasted out, which sack went into which batch - typed into a spreadsheet later | Hours every week - and the numbers are only as good as the handwriting | roast in / roast out booked on the scale while you weigh, with batch number, green lot, user and time - next to the profile logger you already use |
| Roast loss and real costs per kg unknown per batch | Prices from a gut feeling - a few % more loss and the margin is gone without you noticing | the roast loss of every batch before you book, costs and profit per kg roasted, blend prices from their parts |
| Bags overfilled "to be safe" | Easily hundreds of euros of coffee a year given away | fill weighing with live statistics - the mean and T1 on screen, you fill close to the nominal |
| Filling by eye on a bench scale - no record of the bag weights | Nobody knows the real mean or the coffee given away, and there is nothing to show when someone asks | every bag taken by the scale, statistics and a report for each filling - on the scales you have, with our RS-232 adapter also on your verified scale |
| Green coffee stock unclear, ordered too late | A sold-out house blend, or capital tied up in sacks | green ledger and stock on the scale, the planner says how much green to order |
| A complaint, a recall, EUDR questions | Searching through folders - which bags came from which green lot? | batch trace in one click: bag → roast batch → green lot with its EUDR reference → every bag sold |
| The ℮ check of the weights and measures office | Uncertainty, and lists nobody has time for | ℮ PACK CHECK of the closed bags with the EU sample plan and a lot report |
| Coffee tax month (Germany) added up by hand | An evening every month, and mistakes cost | the coffee tax overview adds up the month from the bookings |
| Roast date, lot and weight stickers by hand on every pre-printed bag | Time at every bag, and a wrong date or lot on the shelf | a sticker or full label with roast date, lot, weight with ℮, price and EAN-13, printed by itself with every bag |
| A team with notes on different phones and papers | Nobody knows what is booked - and what not | everything is saved on the scale, every phone of the team sees the same |
In short: less writing, no overfilling, prices you can trust, and an answer for the customer, the inspector and the tax office in minutes - on the scale you already weigh with.
What UP↑SCALE is not - honestly
- No roast profile logger and no roaster control: no temperature curves, no burner or airflow control. Keep Artisan, Cropster or the software of your roaster for the profile - UP↑SCALE does the weights, the batches, the stock and the bags around it.
- No filling machine and no automatic check-weigher: fill weighing is a help for filling by hand, bag by bag, on your scale - not an auger filler or a conveyor line. But it can drive one: the 🏭 factory mode (PRO) fills bag after bag with the same amount, counts, tares and logs by itself, and switches your doser, pump or valve over ESP-NOW radio (the WiFi radio of the scale, no network or router needed) - with a cut-off that learns how much still falls after the stop. More about filling
- Fill weighing is not the ℮ control - and we are not the inspector: fill weighing watches the open bags. The ℮ check of the closed bags is a step of its own - and it is included in the same app: ℮ PACK CHECK takes the closed bags with the EU sample plan (or the German FPackV), judges the lot by T1, T2 and the mean and gives you the lot report with the batch number (the ℮ control step by step). The weights and measures office still decides.
- No cash register, no shop system, no accounting: the sales log adds up what was weighed and sold - it is no fiscal cash register (in Germany with TSE), no web shop and no bookkeeping; your accountant gets plain CSV files.
- Not a declaration to the tax office: the coffee tax overview is the basis for your own declaration - check the rules with your Hauptzollamt.
- Not verified for trade: neither the app nor our own scales are verified scales. To sell by weight or for the ℮ check, use your verified, legal-for-trade scale with our RS-232 adapter - its display stays the legal reading.
- No EUDR due diligence: the batch trace keeps the reference of your importer's due diligence statement - the statement itself is made by the importer.
What helps you most
1The ROASTERY ☕ MODE: one screen for the whole roastery TRY 14 DAYS FREEPRO
Choose the ROASTERY ☕ MODE and your scale shows two tabs: ☕ SALES for the shop counter and 🔥 ROASTING with big buttons for green in, roast in, roast out, sorted out (green or roasted), sample / own use, waste, blend and green out. Put the coffee on the scale, press BOOK NOW, confirm - done. Every booking is saved on the scale with time, user, coffee, lot and batch number, and every phone and tablet of your team sees the same. It runs next to the normal SALES MODE on the same scale. Grams and kilos - or ounces and pounds: the mode shows and calculates everything in the unit your scale is set to, prices and costs per kg or per lb. A new coffee? + NEW GREEN COFFEE, + NEW ROASTED COFFEE and + NEW BLEND make it right there: name, selling price and costs per kg (for a roasted coffee the costs of its batch are proposed: green costs, roast loss, what was sorted out and your roasting costs; for a blend the price and costs of its parts), lot or batch, the stock you have now - saved on the scale, no trip to the THING editor.

2Roast loss of every batch - on the spot TRY 14 DAYS FREEPRO
Roast in weighs the green charge and proposes the batch number (e.g. R261103-01) - several sacks into one charge are added up. Roast out offers the open batches: choose yours, put the cooled beans on the scale and the confirmation shows the roast loss (usually 12-20 %) before you book. The loss and the roast colour go into the record, and the batch becomes a lot of the roasted coffee - ready for the label. The 🔥 roast log lists every batch with green in, roasted out, loss, colour, sorted out, samples and waste - and what a kg of it cost you: the costs of its green coffee divided by the roasted kg, plus your roasting costs per kg. The batch trace shows the margin of the bags sold from it.

3From the bag back to the farm: batch trace TRY 14 DAYS FREEPRO
The lot code on the bag leads to the batch, the batch to its green lot - with origin, farm, process, crop year, importer and the EUDR reference of the due diligence statement of your importer - and to every bag sold, every sample and the blends that used it. One click on 🔎 BATCH TRACE answers a customer complaint or a question of the authority in a minute.

4Green coffee ledger and stock TRY 14 DAYS FREEPRO
Green in books the sacks of a green lot (with the moisture, if you measure it). The 🌱 green ledger shows per lot what came in, what was roasted, sorted out or returned - and the rest. The 📦 inventory keeps the stock of green and roasted coffee with its value; after green in and roast out the app asks to add the weight to the stock, roasting and selling take it out.

5Blends right in the mode - with price and costs TRY 14 DAYS FREEPRO
Tap 🔀 BLEND, choose your blend and its roasted coffees with their batches and shares - the app shows at once what 100 g and 1 kg of the blend cost you and sell for, from the prices and costs of the parts. Then the scale guides the weighing: every part in any order, a part that gets a little more, 🧮 recalculate the others from a part that is off - and every phone of the team sees the same. Nothing is booked until you press BOOK THE BLEND: then the scale books every part and the blend itself, with the weights it took - every part leaves its batch and its stock, the blend gets its own batch number and its stock, and the batch trace goes blend → roast batches → green lots. A new blend? + NEW BLEND takes the combined price and costs as its proposal.
Manual: blends
6Fill weighing of the bags with live statistics - and the ℮ report of the closed bags TRY 14 DAYS FREEPRO
🛍 FILL WEIGHING right in the roastery mode: choose the roasted coffee, its batch and the bag size (250 g, 500 g, 1 kg in one click) and fill. The box turns yellow, green or red with every gram, AUTO TARE tares each empty bag by itself, and the statistics grow with every bag: mean, spread, bags below T1 / T2, run chart, histogram - and the coffee you give away in g and %. FINISH moves the filled kilos in the stock from the roasted coffee to the bag product (no sale booked, nothing counted twice) and gives the bags the batch number for label and lot code.
The bag as a product of its own: + CREATE PREPACKED PRODUCT AS THING makes the bag THING right from the filling (e.g. "Guji 250 g") - with its price and costs per bag (proposed from the roasted coffee), the batch as its lot and all units of the coffee you want to keep. One coffee can have as many bag sizes as you like (250 g, 500 g, 1 kg ...). To sell, choose the bag in ☕ SALE, type the number of bags - nothing has to be on the scale - and change the price per bag if you like before you book. The stock comes out of the bag THING, and the 📦 stock shows the bags in stock per size and the coffee in total with the bags (open coffee + bags), also in the stock CSV.
Labels for every bag: the same label as in the sales mode (your setup, price, EAN, roast date, origin, lot) from the label bar of the filling - or printed automatically at every bag. With the ℮ rules the label carries the nominal with the ℮ mark (250 g ℮) and the price of the bag; the ℮ mark can be switched off in the label setup, and the price line can be called by your currency, "Price" or "Equivalent".
Two steps, like the law sees it: fill weighing watches the filling while the bags are still open - an open bag can still lose a few beans before it is sealed. The ℮ prepackage control is made afterwards with the closed bags: ℮ PACK CHECK takes them with the EU sample plan and gives the lot report with the batch number for the authority. Both are in the same app, on the same scale.
What it saves you: a dedicated check-weigher or filling scale with statistics software easily costs a few thousand euros - here it is your scale and the app. Nobody writes bag weights on a list and types them into a spreadsheet any more (on 200 bags that is quickly an hour a week). And the biggest money: most roasters overfill "to be on the safe side". Once you see the mean and the T1 limit live, you fill close to the nominal instead.
| Example (your numbers will differ) | Overfill before | With live statistics | Saved per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 800 bags of 250 g per month, coffee at 28 €/kg sale value | +6 g per bag = 4.8 kg / month | +1.5 g per bag = 1.2 kg / month | 43 kg ≈ 1,210 € |
| 300 bags of 1 kg per month, 22 €/kg | +15 g per bag = 4.5 kg / month | +4 g per bag = 1.2 kg / month | 40 kg ≈ 870 € |
| A small roastery: 200 bags of 500 g per month, 30 €/kg | +8 g per bag = 1.6 kg / month | +2 g per bag = 0.4 kg / month | 14 kg ≈ 430 € |
So the scale and the PRO licence usually pay for themselves within the first weeks or months - before you count the hours of writing lists you no longer spend. Labels with origin, roast date, lot, net weight, price and EAN-13 print right after weighing.

7Coffee tax month (Germany: Kaffeesteuer) TRY 14 DAYS FREEPRO
Roasted coffee is taxed per kg when it leaves your tax warehouse. The 💶 COFFEE TAX overview adds up a month for you: roasted coffee produced, the removals (sales, samples, own use), kg × your rate - waste listed apart, green coffee not counted. 8Reports, statistics and exports TRY 14 DAYS FREEPRO+ ENTERPRISE
📅 Overview of a month or year per coffee (green in, roasted, mean roast loss, samples, waste, sold, revenue, costs per kg roasted, profit), 📊 statistics with the roast loss of every batch as a chart and the batches far from the mean (worth a cupping), and a 📈 planner: how much green coffee for the roasted kg you need, from the loss of your last 10 batches. Weigh on several scales (sacks on the floor scale, bags on the table scale, the shop on a third)? ⇄ OTHER SCALES joins them in one report. Every report prints or goes out as CSV - the roast log with columns like weight in / weight out / batch number to line it up with your roast curves (Artisan, Cropster ...), the green ledger with one row per green lot. With ENTERPRISE the records are numbered and chained by the scale and the sealed report can be checked by anybody; the live JSON forwarding sends every booking to your own server or ERP.

How it helps you: examples
Monday roast
Three sacks of Ethiopia Guji go onto the floor scale. ROAST IN books 12.0 kg against the green lot ETH-0425 and the proposed batch R261103-01. After cooling, ROAST OUT books 10.15 kg - the scale shows 15.4 % roast loss before you confirm. The roast log is complete, without paper and without typing numbers twice.
What does a kg cost me?
The green coffee "Guji green" costs you 8.00 EUR per kg with freight - you typed it once as its costs. The 12.0 kg of batch R261103-01 cost 96.00 EUR, 10.15 kg came out: 9.46 EUR per kg roasted, plus your roasting costs of 1.50 EUR per kg = 10.96 EUR per kg. You sell it for 30.00 EUR per kg: the batch trace shows the margin of every bag sold. And when the green coffee gets dearer, the trace tells you that the costs of your roasted coffee are out of date.
A customer calls
"The bag from last week tastes odd." You scan the lot code on the bag: batch R261103-01 of 3 November → green lot ETH-0425 from your importer with its EUDR reference → 38 bags sold from that batch, 300 g taken for cupping. You know at once which bags to check - and which other batches came from the same green lot.
Month end
The coffee tax overview shows 412 kg roasted and 398 kg that left the roastery (sales + samples and own use): 398 kg × 2.19 EUR = 871.62 EUR as the basis for your declaration. The waste of the month is listed apart, so you can see it at a glance.
Ordering green coffee
A wholesale customer orders 60 kg of your house roast per month. The planner takes the mean roast loss of your last 10 batches (16 %) and says: 71.4 kg green - and that only 45 kg are left of that green lot. Time to order.
Bag filling
500 g bags of batch R261103-01: 🛍 FILL WEIGHING shows the mean live while you fill - after 20 bags it says +7.8 g per bag given away, so you fill closer: the next 40 bags end at +2.1 g. FINISH moves 30.2 kg from the roasted coffee to "House 500 g" - 60 bags in stock. A shop takes 12 bags: ☕ SALE, 12 bags, 13.90 EUR per bag, BOOK - 48 bags left. When the bags are sealed, ℮ PACK CHECK takes the sample of the closed bags: mean 502.0 g, no bag below T1 - the lot report with the batch number goes into the folder for the inspector.
Tips from the practice
- Two THINGS per coffee: the green coffee (e.g. "Guji green", with its costs per kg) and the roasted coffee with its selling price and costs ("Guji") - green in and roast in book the first, roast out and the sales the second. Make both right in the mode with + NEW; at roast out the app offers the roasted coffee of the last roast of that green coffee.
- One bag THING per bag size ("Guji 250 g", "Guji 1 kg") - made from the filling with one button, with its own price per bag and EAN.
- One batch number per roast - the mode proposes one with date and counter, the lot store keeps it with its green lot.
- Big scale for the sacks, fine scale for the bags - at the same time: connect both (e.g. two scales with our RS-232 adapters) with ADD MORE 🤝 SCALES, and the roastery mode weighs with both in the same app: each scale shows its own weight and TARE small on top, the big number, the booking and the fill weighing take their sum - put the sack on the platform scale or the bag on the fine one, no switching. A scale in another room or on another phone? Its reports are joined with ⇄ OTHER SCALES.
- Check the bag filling with your verified scale (RS-232 adapter with EXACT WEIGHT).
The rules you should know
- Coffee bags with a nominal quantity are prepackages: 76/211/EEC (℮), in Germany FPackV - checked with a verified scale
- Food labels: EU regulation 1169/2011 (net quantity, best before, lot)
- Germany: the Kaffeesteuergesetz (KaffeeStG) taxes roasted coffee per kg when it leaves the tax warehouse (Steuerlager, permit of the Hauptzollamt); green coffee is not taxed
- EU deforestation regulation (EUDR, 2023/1115 as amended by 2025/2650): from 30 December 2026 for medium and large companies, from 30 June 2027 for micro and small ones - keep the reference numbers of the due diligence statements of your green coffee
No legal or tax advice - ask your customs office and your weights and measures office about your setup. The roastery mode is a documentation aid.
